…Once upon a time there was a town called Ivano-Frankivsk. In that town there was a cinema called Cosmos. Why was it called a Cosmos? Well, all the locals knew that it wasn’t an ordinary place. At the back of it was a real, secret small COSMOS!
You can enter through gate, where a Milky Way will lead you amongst stardust to the center of a galaxy. On your way you will see pieces of meteors and you would want to avoid comets, followed by a sliver water tail.
There is a spaceship hidden amongst trees, that will take you to every corner of the universe, even those far far away. It is thanks to its powerful fuel – imagination.
There are unknown stars, planets and moons waiting to be discovered at arrival. And many attractions waiting for the little and the bigger space travelers.
Also parents and grandparents will find here space to relax and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet. Secluded area is separated from the town noise by a beautiful greenery. Everyone is welcome in this most beautiful universe of all.
Due to the fact, that it used to be a Jewish necropolis, the playground is placed at the top of a raised platform, right at the back of the cinema. To not profane, building of playground equipment or other elements that would include disturbing the ground has been omitted in park area. Remaining area of the terrain has been turned into a peaceful park.
A little water stream has been incorporated into the ground of the frame-gate. Crossing it symbolizes washing hands when leaving the former cemetery. This gesture is a part of a Jewish culture. Also the myrtle is the parts of Jewish culture (used in religious ceremonies), and it is planted across the park.
POLAND SUPPORT INDEPENDENT UKRAINE Logo
To emphasis support of Poland for Ukraine in these difficult times on certain elements and benches a special logo was placed. It combines Polish and Ukrainian flag colors.
DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURES AND MATERIALS
Gate-frame, main entrance
Main entrance to the park is on Stefanyk street. It is made into a frame looking gate. Spectators see through it a path – viewing axis, which leads to the raised playground and planet three-dimensional installation on the cinema back wall, covered in a beautiful mural. The gate frames the picture perfectly.
One of the main elements, most visible from the entrance, are round stairs, which lead up to the playground. Spectacular, wide stairs are made of four staircases and platform in the middle. There are
ramps on both sides of the stairs for wheelchair users, parents with buggies and cyclists. Ramps link cinema area and the park .
Shape of the staircase is outlined by the potted plants along the ramps. There are flower pots incorporated into the steps – they have shapes reminds Mars rocks. In the step flooring there’s also incorporated a mosaics with graphic information about the solar system and cosmos; in that way they also have an educational function.
Also at the bottom of the stairs there is space, that can be used as stage or for smaller private events.
The biggest field is park itself. It’s a place of relaxation and an escape from the city noise.
Because it is former Jewish necropolis the playground elements were not included into the park project, except the tree house. Instead a half a meter high stream was created. Calming sound of flowing water helps to relax on the park benches.
Children and teenagers active recreation zone
By the back wall of the cinema there is playground for children of all ages, whit units like sand pit for the youngest ones. For older children there’s climbing walls, swings, trampolines , seesaw. There is skate park for youngsters too.
Children can hide under two gazebos from too much sun or even rain. The building itself also provides shade. For parents and guardians there are also seats in the playground.
It is worth mentioning that most of the toys and activity elements are not just traditional ones. They are constructions with almost undefined function, which awake kids imagination and creativity.
Surfaces in the playground are made of colorful, entertaining, safe, shock absorbing materials. Kids area is limited by wooden ring from back side and lines of plants and bushes from the front.
Intense street lights do not allow to appreciate beautiful night sky and stars . So on the wall of the Cosmos there is a beautiful mural showing a night sky full of stars.
In the middle of the park there is a comet with a water tail. It’s actually a stream in the shape of a comet. Water flows down in a shallow concrete riverbed and then deepens into the ground, where it crosses the path. In this moment the stream is covered in a thin metal bars so u can also walk on it.
End of the stream reaches all the way to the main entrance’s frame gate. There is a pump, which pumps the water back to the source in the park. Water flow with gravity, due to a slight decrease of terrain. The water circulates in a closed circuit.
An alley extend from the main gate through the entire length of the park. Form of avenue is inspired by the shape of the Milky Way. Flooring figure is made in the shape of rocks on Mars. Pattern of the pavement is inspired by rocks from mars.
The secondary paths communicate the existing entrance to the square from both sides of Cosmos cinema, neighboring housing estates and entrance from the Stefanyk street. With their shape they remind us of an expanding galaxy.
The parking is meant to be on both sides of the cinema Cosmos
Architectural details: benches, litter bins, pots
There are two kinds of Benches on the park.
Along main parkway benches have shape of rocks, every one of them is an individual sculpture included in irregular shape of alleys. Benches are made of concrete and wood. Some of them are filled by flower pots. Second set of benches is alongside smaller side roads. They are made of minimalistic wooden logs connected together by metal frame. To complete the look the litter bins and pots are made of the same materials.
To complete the park look colorful plants has been planted, with their look they meant to cheer visitors up and give the park an individual look. All plants are hardy, birds, bees and butterfly friendly. When choosing trees for the park architects considered neighbors of the park- trees tall enough to give shade but not too tall to block the light for neighboring buildings. Amongst the plants are types with decorative leaves that will keep park beautiful from spring till late autumn, and also evergreens for winter.
